Saturday 4th February is World Cancer Day. What is it? Well it’s a global event, uniting the world’s population in the fight against cancer.
The aim is to raise awareness and education about the disease, pressing the government and individuals across the world to take action, and hopefully saving millions of preventable deaths each year.

This year, nine charities have come together to support World Cancer Day – Cancer Research UK, Breast Cancer Care, Bowel Cancer UK, Breast Cancer NowChildren’s Cancer and Leukaemia, Young Lives vs Cancer Clic SargentMarie CurieThe Royal Marsden, Anthony Nolan and the Movember Foundation, each selling Unity Wristbands for £2 to raise funds and so wearers can show their support.

The theme is ‘We can. I can.’  Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways, all people have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities. For example, you can make healthy lifestyle choices, understand that early detection saves lives, ask for support, support others, share your story and so on.

The fact is that 1 in 2 people born after 1960 in the UK will be diagnosed with some form of cancer in their lifetime*. But, with life changing advances in research over the last 40 years, survival has doubled. Although this is good news, coping with the diagnosis is still challenging enough without having to think about money.

Whilst insurance can’t protect you from a cancer diagnosis, it can be a safety net from the financial consequences cancer can have. Research has shown that 80% of people are on average £570 worse off each month, as the result of a cancer diagnosis^. Cover that pays out a lump sum benefit if you were to be diagnosed with cancer, can mean you wouldn’t have to worry about your finances while you’re having treatment - leaving you free to concentrate on getting better.
