A survey of 45 to 70-year-olds has shown alarming lack of understanding regarding the true cost of medical emergencies abroad.
Almost 90% of respondents failed to correctly estimate what size bill to expect if they fell ill or suffered an accident while on their holidays.

That's according to specialist travel insurance company AllClear, who carried out the research and state that the typical cost of a medical emergency claim in Europe is between £5,000 and £6,000.

The group with the poorest knowledge was 66 to 77-year-olds. Only 7% of those questioned in this age group knew how much medical costs would be.
